The popular anti-hero may serve as a villain, a not-so-friendly ally in a greater battle, or perhaps even a mix of both throughout the game. Players will reprise the role of Spidey in Insomniac’s sequel, stepping into the shoes of the friendly neighborhood hero – though he won’t be alone. Since the game lets you play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, this motif of them coming together to overcome their villains.

Players who explored the previous Spider-Man games may remember that they could discover Nelson and Murdock’s plaque on a building in Hell’s Kitchen, suggesting these Daredevil characters ran their legal business from there. Interestingly, in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 the plaque remains but all text is gone, perhaps implying that they have relocated elsewhere. After the disappointment of Marvel’s Avengers, who knew that Square Enix would publish one of Marvel’s best ever games shortly afterwards?

Unfortunately, Shocker is one of Kraven’s victims, and among the first characters to die at Kraven the Hunter’s hands. While it is unclear if the games will follow this route, the introduction of Cindy does tease the potential for yet another Spidey to join the fight. Now, in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, players alternate between both heroes with the press of a button. Peter’s trying to hold down a new teaching job at Miles’ high school, while Miles has his hands full with college applications. You’ll watch them navigate their intersecting civilian lives while teaming up to protect the city. Much like the previous Insomniac Spider-Man titles, the city of New York in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is filled to the brim with references and easter eggs that link out to the wider Marvel universe, amongst other fun nods and winks.

It’s the best-written story in the series yet (if still a bit cheesy at times), with performances worthy of the script. It’s a real triumph that it manages to cover such a wide spectrum of themes without suffering from tonal thwip-lash. A particularly memorable mission under the dancing lights of Coney Island’s amusement rides is a highlight that manages to impressively capture the story’s essence and bottle up its emotional tension before emphatically smashing it.
